Tablo TV is Saving Me $95/month After This Investment
In December of 2020, I bought an RCA Compact Outdoor or Attic Yagi HD TV Antenna from Amazon and used it temporarily in our TV room to watch local channels. I also used a clumsy system to record our local channel network evening news, but having an antenna in our TV room was unsightly. I ultimately retired the antenna, stashed it in our attic and switched to the HULU streaming service that included our local channels and could record live programs in the cloud. Unfortunately HULU kept increasing their monthly charges until they reached $95.00 per month. The final straw came when HULU’s system began malfunctioning and not recording programs I had selected. Although I knew that it would be a hassle to mount my antenna in the attic and route 50-feet of coax from our attic through a wall and into our first-floor TV room, the promise by Tablo TV that it could eliminate my monthly charges and simultaneously record up to four channels at a time was not only appealing, it would be cost-effective. Exercising my faith that Tablo TV’s fourth generation unit would perform as promised, I ordered one from Amazon. It was heavily discounted for Black Friday after I bought it, but I was finally motivated to properly install my antenna in our attic, knowing it had already worked OK from the first floor of our home.My home is located about 20 miles from our area’s TV station’s broadcast antennas. My RCA antenna and 50-feet of Reliagent RG6 coaxial cable I ordered from Amazon working along with a Philips signal booster, I was able to snag 33 digital HD-TV channels with interference-free signals. Although my Tablo TV app was not compatible with my Sony 2025 OLED TV, Amazon was selling its newest Fire TV stick for half price, so I bought one, plugged it into the HDMI1 input on my TV and then ran the Tablo TV app on the compatible Fire TV stick. Adding the Internet channels that my new Tablo TV was able to supply via my home’s WiFi connection through the Fire TV stick, I now have about 170 commercial channels to view without paying a dime in monthly charges for those channels. That setup worked so well that I bought two more of Amazon’s newest Fire TV sticks, installed them on our other two TVs in and used them to run Tablo TV on those sets.In accordance with the setup instructions, I did the initial installation of Tablo TV from my Motorola Android phone, which also allows me to watch and record my 170 channels at home as long as I’m connected to our home’s WiFi. The Tablo TV box comes with some internal memory that allows recording about 50 hours, but I also bought a tiny 1 TB SSD hard drive from Amazon, shown in my photo, plugged it into the Tablo’s USB port, formatted it and added countless more hours of recording capacity. I found Tablo TV’s user interface to be simple, reliable, easy-to-follow and similar to the streaming services with monthly charges.Since Tablo TV shares its signal to the apps on all of the three Fire TV sticks wirelessly, I’m able to watch any of the 170 channels on any or all of my three TV sets without needing antenna connections and view any TV shows that I have recorded. Instead of paying HULU $95.00 per month, I now pay them ZERO dollars per month, yet have more channels to watch and am able to reliably record and play any of my Tablo TV channels on any of my TVs. Setting up Tablo TV, I found both their phone and on-line support helpful, but they could not fix their app’s incompatibility with my circa 2019 Fire TV stick, which is why I bought Amazon’s newest versions.

Unless you like banging your head against a wall stay away from this thing.
Cable was getting was too expensive so a couple of months ago I decided to cut the cord. I checked Antenna Mans’ web site and YouTube channel to get an antenna recommendation and it worked out great. I have an indoor antenna recommended by him mounted to the back of my 65″ LG Webos TV and get 101 OTA channels through my TV.The one thing I missed though was the DVR function of the cable box to record stuff when I’m not around. So I decided to get an OTA DVR and Antenna Man recommended this one. Having good luck with his antenna recommendation I went ahead and purchased it. Big Mistake! The set up was straight forward and very easy, but that’s the only thing that was good. After doing a channel scan via the APP which was installed on my TV it found 10 channels less than the TV’s tuner did, even though they are both hooked up to the same antenna. There are also lots of channels where the reception is very bad and pixelated and the app just quits working and goes back to my TV’s home screen. So I decided to get a Firestick and install the App on that figuring that the TV app was the problem. After setting it up on my Firestick the results were the exact same as the App on the TV, fewer channels and others that the reception was horrible. I have attached photos of the bad reception and the error that I am always getting.Besides all that, the app is just horrible. It’s very slow to respond and sometimes refuses to start up at all, and that’s on both the TV and Firestick. I once let it run its course for over 4 hours and all I ever got wat the spinning ring of death. I find myself constantly having to unplug it and then plug it back in for it to run. It also takes 3 button presses to tune into a channel. 1: Select guide 2: select channel 3: Click “watch live”. The channel up and down buttons on the remote do nothing.Their support is a joke, all they ever do is blame your antenna or internet connection even though I stream 4K video with no problem and using the same antenna through the TV doesn’t have any issues either. They simply refuse to acknowledge that the problem could be their device despite their support forum being filled with people with similar problems. So I did a bit more looking and found an App called Tivimate which can be sideloaded onto the Firestick. There are lots of tutorials on line how to set it up and the premium version costs $30 for lifetime and lets you record TV. So for about $60 which was the cost of the premium APP and Firestick I now have over 30,000 channels from all over the world which I can watch and record.Edit: 4-24- 2025After spending countless hours trying to debug this POS, support gets back to me and says, “We cannot refund you as you did not purchase the product from us, if you prefer a refund you could reach out to Amazon to see if the can make an exception outside of your return window.” They also refuse to send a replacement unit. They blamed everything they could except their unit. They blamed the antena, internet connection, router security settings, hard drive, OTA vs digital channels, and finally the device cache itself which they said they cleared out and the device was now “working as expected”. Even though it never did, unless as expected means crashes, lockups, slow responding menus, and decoding errors, and unable to connect errors.

Good value. Pays for itself in savings
I bought this after dropping YouTube TV, and it’s been worth it. The Tablo works all the time, and I get 160+ channels for free. An outdoor antenna makes a huge difference, and it runs on Roku without any problems. That said, the app needs work. You can’t set manual recordings, so if a show isn’t in the guide, you’re out of luck—even on big channels like ABC or CBS. Watching a series doesn’t auto-play the next episode, it just stops. Sometimes live TV cuts out the same way. Navigating recordings is clunky and frustrating. It really feels like the developers don’t use their own product.Still, the device is functional and offers incredible value. As long as your network is solid and your antenna gets a strong signal, you should have very few issues.
